The Andaman and Nicobar Islands ("Andaman" & "Nicobar" About this sound local (help info)), one of the seven union territories of India, are a group of islands at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

The territory is 150 km (93 mi) north of Aceh in Indonesia and separated from Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) by the Andaman Sea. It comprises two island groups, the Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands, separated by the 10°N parallel, with the Andamans to the north of this latitude, and the Nicobars to the south (or by 179 km). The Andaman Sea lies to the east and the Bay of Bengal to the west.


The territory's capital is the Andamanese town of Port Blair. The total land area of these islands is approximately 8,249 km2 (3,185 sq mi). The capital of Nicobar Islands is Car Nicobar. The islands host the Andaman and Nicobar Command, the only tri-service geographical command of the Indian Armed Forces.


The Andaman Islands are home to the only known Paleolithic people, the Sentinelese people, who have no contact with any other people.

  • Havlock Island

    This Island, with beautiful sandy beaches fringed with green canopy of the rain forest beckons everyone to enjoy to enjoy the fun at the azure sea. RADHA NAGAR BEACH, lies on the south coast of Havelock Island. It is about 14 kms away from the islands ferry quay. The beautiful sandy beaches and lush green forest. Radha Nagar is a real exposure to the unpolluted nature for an environment lover. Radha Nagar is a Grade A beach of outstanding quality. This beach is also rated as the best beach in Asia by TIME MAGAZINE. It has overall length of two kilometers and an average width of 30 to 40 meters. The rocky ridges seen at the end of the beach provide some variety to the littoral. The quality of water at Radha Nagar beach is extremely calm and clear. There is very little wave action and consequently almost no turbidly in the water even along the surf line.

  • Cellular Jail

    The Cellular jail situated in Port Blair, Andaman Islands is closely associated with the freedom struggle of India. The Cellular jail, built in 1896 was used by the British to transport Indian freedom fighters from the Indian mainland. Thousands of freedom fighters languished for years in solitary confinement in the cells of the Cellular Jail. Today, the Cellular Jail is declared as the National Memorial, a tribute to those who dared to raise their voices against the British rule. Some of the famous inmates of the Cellular jail were Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Dr. Diwan Singh Kalepani, Yogendra Shukla, Bhai Parmanand, and Maulana Ahmadullah.The saga of the heroic freedom struggle is brought alive in a moving Sound & Light show at the Cellular Jail. The show is conducted every evening in the premises of Cellular jail which gives us a brief idea about the happenings in the jail prior to Independence in 1947.

  • Ross Island

    Once the seat of British power and capital of these Islands from 1858 till 1941,when the Japanese occupied it and converted it into PoW site. it stands now a ruin of the bygone days with the old structures of the Church and the Chief Commissioner’s bunglow, swimming pool etc in debris. This small Island in less than a sq. km area that stands right across Port Blair, encompassing in a way the entire life of the Andamans. It was once the home of the indigenous tribe Great Andamanese, whose number dwindled from 5,000 to just 28 with in 20 years of the initial British occupation A small museum named ‘Smritika’ hold photographs, and other antiques of the British relevant to these islands.

    Carbyn's Cove is a serene and unspoiled soft sandy beach in Andaman near to Port Blair.
